Safety disclaimer
VTHiking is a reference tool, not a navigation device. Do not rely on it as your only source of information in the backcountry.
Trail data
Trail geometry comes from OpenStreetMap, a community-maintained map. It is often excellent and sometimes wrong. Trails may be rerouted, closed, overgrown, or may never have existed as mapped. Lengths shown here are computed from mapped geometry and are approximate — they do not account for terrain, and they are not a measure of how long a hike will take.
Difficulty is shown only where the underlying data provides it. Most trails show not rated, and that genuinely means unknown rather than easy.
Elevation
Trailhead elevations come from the USGS 3D Elevation Program and refer to the parking area, not the summit or the high point of any trail. We do not currently publish elevation gain.
Parking fees and permits
Parking information is either verified by hand — in which case the verification date is shown — or marked unverified. Fees, permit requirements, seasonal closures and lot capacity all change, sometimes without notice. Posted signage at the trailhead always overrides anything on this site.
Entries labelled likely free or likely paid are community-contributed hints from OpenStreetMap that we have not checked. Treat them as a starting point only.
Trail conditions and seasons
We do not publish live trail conditions. In particular, Vermont's mud season (roughly late March through late May) causes serious erosion damage on high-elevation trails, and the Green Mountain Club asks hikers to stay off them during it. Check with the Green Mountain Club and the relevant land manager before heading out in spring.
Your responsibility
Hiking carries inherent risk. You are responsible for your own planning, equipment, navigation, fitness and judgement. Carry a map and compass or a dedicated GPS device and know how to use them. Tell someone where you are going. Cell coverage across much of the Green Mountains is poor or absent.
VTHiking is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We accept no liability for any loss, injury or damage arising from use of this site or the data on it.
Found something wrong?
Corrections are welcome — see how to report an issue. Errors in trail geometry are best fixed directly in OpenStreetMap, where the fix benefits everyone.
