About this trail

The Long Trail runs the length of Vermont along the main ridge of the Green Mountains, 272 miles from the Massachusetts line to the Canadian border. Built by Green Mountain Club volunteers between 1910 and 1930, it is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States, and its southern 100 miles or so share the footpath with the Appalachian Trail. More than 70 free, rustic shelters and tent sites sit along the way. Thru-hikers take a few weeks; many people hike it in sections over years. This page shows the trail as mapped, in pieces, and the climb figure is an estimate for the whole length.

Other access, a short walk away

Walking distances follow the mapped trail network. They are not a route, they ignore slope, and they are not driving directions.

OpenStreetMap grades the footing here as: mostly marked; some steep or uneven ground. That describes the ground, not how hard the hike is.

Climb are estimates worked out from the mapped line and USGS elevation data, not measurements or official ratings. This trail has several separate pieces, so the climb is an average of the two directions.
