About this trail
The Monroe Trail climbs Camel's Hump from the east, starting at the lots at the end of Camel's Hump Road in North Duxbury. The state's guide gives it as 3.1 miles, moderately difficult, and calls it one of the mountain's most popular routes. It meets the Dean Trail at 1.3 miles and the Alpine Trail at 2.5 miles, and ends at Hut Clearing on the Long Trail, 0.3 mile below the summit. Beside the upper lot is a small cemetery where Will Monroe is buried with his sister and several of his dogs, along with a plaque to the crew of a B-24 bomber that crashed on the mountain in 1944.
Good to know
- In winter, trail access is from a lot 0.3 mile below the main lots.
- The Alpine Trail branch is exposed and rough; the state rates it difficult.
- Longer loops of 6.6 and 7.4 miles use the Alpine or Dean trails and the Long Trail.
